A team from Sand Mar(ns Golf Club have just been pipped at the post after reaching the final of the Annodata Matchplay Golf Classic – the singles matchplay team event for men and women.
720 teams competed nationally for a place in the Grand Finals which were held at the Montecasillo Golf Resort near Jerez in Spain. Only 4 clubs are invited to the Grand Finals to play the semi final matches for a shot at the Ladies Final in what is widely considered one of the more prestigious competitions in national club golf.
Seven players and 6 supporters/caddies flew to Spain for the Semi-Final which was played on 8th March v Brampton Park Golf Club from Cambridgeshire. As per the norm, 5 matches were played with Sand Martins winning 3 of their singles matches and halving another to get into the Final on 9th March. The final was v local Home Counties rivals Tandridge Golf Club from Surrey. Despite our best efforts in the unseasonably cool and damp conditions, the Sand Martins team lost 3 matches, halved another and ended Runners-up on the day with a 3.5 to 1.5 victory to Tandridge.
A great time was had by all and everyone very much enjoyed the experience after a fairly traumatic journey to the event which included a last minute decision by the pilot to abort the landing in Gibraltar! Individual joy also for team captain Jacqui Quilter who made a slightly ‘wasteful’ ace on the 2nd hole of the practice round played on the day before the semis.
The Sand Mar(ns team for the final: Yvonne Gayle, Helen McCabe, Susanne Wilson, Alice Allan & Jacqui Quilter.
