The 2022 Berkshire Girls Championship took place on 10 July at Sonning Golf Club with 10 competitors entered. Thanks to Andy George, the clubs General Manager, for allowing the BCLGA courtesy of the course and to the catering staff for looking after the girls so well. Thank you also to Andrew Lansley for inputting the scores and to Jacqui Quilter for her help in the background.

The BCLGA President Airlie Dyson started the girls on their way, and as it was a baking hot day (with temperatures near to 30 degrees C), she made sure the girls had plenty of water and sunscreen to get them through the next 4 hours.

The course was in great condition, with green grass on fairways despite hardly any rain having fallen for a month. The advantage of the dry course was that drives were running a long long way but the disadvantage was that iron shots onto the greens were really really hard to stop!

The competition was also allocated to The Daily Telegraph/Justin Rose Junior Golf Championship, and as all girls were playing a medal, the net and gross winners were eligible to enter with a chance to proceed to the final in Quinta do Lago in Portugal.

Despite the heat there were some excellent scores with Bella Kent coming in as 2022 Champion with a gross 74 and Layla Maidment narrowly pipping Anjini Jadav to the Handicap Trophy with 70.

Airlie Dyson presented the cups and gifts to the 4 winners with every girl receiving a Callaway golf ball courtesy of the Daily Telegraph. Charlie Keenan, Berkshire Ladies County Captain, then gave words of encouragement to the girls about participating in and supporting future County events.

Fun competitors

There was a small field for the Fun Event which is played back of the Girls Championship. There were some very good scores and the warm weather was enjoyed by the girls. On the count back Phoebe Mustill won with 21 pts, Zoe Price 21pts, Sophia Fadden 19 pts and Alysia Ang 11pts.  This was only third time Alysia played but showed potential to be a good golfer.

My thanks to the helper Annie Pack and Sandra Hall assisting girls around the course.
