Berkshire Girls’ Golf Championship
Newbury and Crookham Golf Club, Sunday 4 July
The forecast for 4 July was not exactly inspiring: about a 40% chance of rain showers, some heavy, all day.
Being the Girls’ Championship everyone is included which meant we were able to welcome the Fun Golfers; their excitement was infectious.

Sophie Sophia Myka Sareen
The Fun Golfers
A big welcome goes to Myka who was playing in her first ‘proper’ competition. She was the only competitor in the 9-hole stableford but we were delighted to present her with a Newbury pitch-mark repairer and ball marker which we hope she will have for a long time to remind her of her first BGG competition.
All the players with handicaps were low enough to enter the Justin Rose/Daily Telegraph Junior Golf Championship so everyone played a medal. Thanks must go to that organisation for the golf balls provided – and the opportunity for our gross and nett winners to go through to the final. As the day was blustery – and the showers did arrive – conditions were difficult for a good score. But we will see ….
Even our better players found the course difficult. Too tight some said. Too hilly was the verdict of others. And the president had her usual effect on one player who managed to notch up a 10 as the president tried to hide out of sight behind starter’s hut at the 10th.
Competitors at Newbury and Crookham Golf Club

As with all these days there are lots of people to thank. Newbury and Crookham GC gave us courtesy of the course and special thanks must go to Amanda Fisher for all her help in setting the day up. On the day itself Geoff was brilliant!
Despite her holiday and consequent isolation, Nicky Jones received all the entries and prepared the start sheet. On Championship day Ann Williams was the referee although calls on her time were few (zero?) and far between. And Robert Yuile was our scorer. It is so good to have someone who can cope with WHS!
Sarla Read and Annie Pack have been running the Fun days all season. It was lovely to have them with us and to see the talent they are developing for future Championship days!
Laura Webb, both our county captain and county champion, was unable to be at Newbury because she was away on international duty for Ireland. However, she had sent along a little goodie bag for every player which was much appreciated.
