Junior Coaching

AIMS

  • - Help girls to learn to play golf.
  • - Assist girls in gaining and then reduce their handicap.
  • - Encourage girls to join a Golf Club.
  • - Make golf a fun, safe and positive experience.
  • - Meet and make friends to play with.

BGG has a Talent Pathway to coach and provide support for girls from beginners to those with single figure handicaps and covering all the stages in between. We aim to give our girls access to high quality coaching, competition and development to suit their talent, skill level and experience. As a girl develops through the year, she may move up the pathway.

The coaching is structured and all aspects of playing golf are explored.

We offer subsidised coaching at 4 levels:–

  • Level 1: Beginners and Improvers
  • Level 2: Intermediate
  • Level 3: BGG Junior Academy
  • Level 4: Junior Team

All coaching is provided by experienced PGA Professionals at local golf clubs.

You may find you start the year at one of the Beginner and Improver centres and as you progress you move on to the Intermediate Centre during the season.

You may join any of the courses during the season, as long as there are places available, and you are welcome to come to try a lesson before you enrol for the full course.

Level 1: Beginners and Improvers

This is for Beginners and Improvers, with 12 lessons spread through from March to October, at roughly two week intervals. All lessons, where possible, are in term time. The lessons run for two hours, with a Professional and an assistant. Beginners may be collected after one hour if parents/Professional feel they cannot cope with two hours.

These sessions are held at Sand Martins Golf Club. Lessons take place on the driving range, putting green and practice bunker. As part of this course, girls should aim to play in as many BGG Fun Competitions as possible – dates of Fun competitions can be found on the BCLGA website – in addition, parents will be emailed with dates of fun competitions.

Level 2: Intermediate

This is aimed at getting pre-handicap girls (and those with handicaps between 36 and 54) playing, putting in cards and joining a Club. Girls will be expected to play or practice between sessions. Lessons take place on the driving range, putting green, practice bunker and on the course.

There are 8 lessons, from February to October at roughly monthly intervals. All lessons, where possible, are in term time. The lessons run for 3 hours. Depending on numbers there may be a morning group as well as an afternoon group.

The course is delivered by Terry Wild at Mill Ride who is assisted by Level 2 Professional Jack Landauer. There are no lessons in August.

Girls will be encouraged to play in the three 2019 Academy Coaching Competitions. Dates for the Academy coaching competitions – as well as the BGG Fun competitions - can be found on the BCLGA website. Parents will also be informed of competition dates by email.

In order to gain an official golf handicap, girls will need to become members of a CONGU affiliated golf club. Many golf clubs offer special junior membership rates.

Level 3: BGG Junior Academy

This is aimed at girls with handicaps below 36 who need coaching and match practice. Girls will be expected to play or practice between sessions. Lessons take place on the driving range, putting green, practice bunker and on the course.

There are 8 three hour lessons run during term time where possible, from February to October, delivered by Terry Wild at Mill Ride assisted by Level 2 Professional, Jack Landauer with no lessons in August. In addition, these girls will be selected to play for the junior county matches and will receive coaching in match play; course management and rules. Girls will be encouraged to play in the 3 Academy Coaching Competitions.

Level 4: Junior Team

These are junior girls aged between 12 and 18 who represent the County in various matches and competitions as well as the 1st and 2nd County Teams. They receive appropriate support to further develop their golfing talent pathway through the County Training Officer and England Golf

Competitions

Fun Competitions:Sarah Pallot (bggfuncompsec@bclga.co.uk) will run BGG Fun Competitions (mostly in the holidays) for Level 1 (beginners and improvers), Level 2 (intermediate) and Level 3 (Junior Academy) girls. These are played over 9 holes and mainly on short courses although some give the opportunity to put in a card for handicap assessment. These fun occasions make the important link between practice sessions on the range and actually playing golf and are considered to be an essential part of our coaching scheme. Fun competitions are also open to girls who are members of any Berkshire golf club or who live in Berkshire.

Academy Coaching Competitions. There are three Competitions run by the local County Ladies Associations in Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire. These will be 18 and 9 hole counting Stableford competitions, so girls can submit cards for handicap adjustment. These competitions will be for Level 2 and Level 3 girls to compete against girls of similar standard from the other Counties.
